UMW SBDC consultants can assist clients in registering to do business with the federal government and Virginia state agencies. They can also assist clients in applying for SWaM (small, woman, and minority-owned) certification and applicable federal certifications, such as 8(a), HUBZone, and veteran-owned.
Additionally, the UMW SBDC hosts one-on-one personalized government contracting assistance consultations with advisors from the Virginia Department of Small Business and Supplier Diversity (SBSD) and the Central Virginia Procurement Assistance Center (PTAP). These advisors are able to answer questions for new and existing vendors doing business with the state or federal governments. Guidance provided includes:
- Identifying target state and federal agencies
- Searching public reports on spending for various products and services
- Determining the correct commodity codes
- Marketing to state and federal agencies
- Searching for upcoming opportunities
- Identifying competitors and potential business partners
All consultations are free and confidential. Consultations held at the UMW Center for Economic Development located in the Eagle Village Shopping Center at 1125 Jefferson Davis Highway, Fredericksburg, VA 22401.

To schedule an appointment with an SBSD advisor, please contact the UMW SBDC office at (540) 654-1383. An advisor is in our office on the first and third Tuesday of each month, and appointments are available in one-hour blocks between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
